Let me just put this out there, but this place has excellent customer service. My group was desperate for an inexpensive place that was still open after 10 pm, so we came in 20 minutes before closing. The staff there were super friendly and very accommodating. Since the kitchen and the cashier were closing, we had to rush on that but the staff told us to take our time eating and even give us free ice cream. They didn't have to give us their best service since we came so late, but they were very cheerful and attentive.
5/5 for customer service.
Now the food was pretty good with decent portion for the affordable price. I ordered the dinner combo of chicken katsu with sashimi. That came with rice and miso soup. The miso soup was a bit water down and the sashimi was decent. But what sold me was the chicken katsu. It had the right level of crispiness and the batter didn't just fall apart after taking a bite. And the most important is that it wasn't dry.
3.5/5 for the food. 4/5 for portion and price.
Overall rating would have been 4/5 but I bump it up into 5/5 for excellent customer service and accommodation. -

Not the most fanciest sushi restaurant, it's a bit small and food is good at a decent sf price! I would suggest coming before the dinner rush to get seated or the entrance "waiting" area gets cramped.
The combination dinner I got was $15.50 for a beef teriyaki with sashimi.
It seems that food comes out pretty quickly. As right after I ordered my food the sashimi came out. But then after that I was left hanging for about 25 minutes. I asked the waiter multiple times if they could check on my food since my boyfriend received his fish Katsu meal relatively fast and I didn't want his food to get cold. They just said it's coming... We were also on a time crunch to eat and head out. So it would've been nice if the server warned me about how long it'd take for my food to come out. -

Driving down 19th Ave and got a craving for sushi out of nowhere so after a quick Yelp search we ended up here at Sushi Zen. The service was great, they have a super friendly staff and even the food itself came out quickly which was nice as we were in a bit of a hurry.
We ordered quite a bit, the Winter Wonderland, King Kong, Chirashi and Katsu Bento. The fish itself was good, tasted fresh enough, cut nicely and a good portion size; all things you look for at a sushi restaurant. The sauces however were thick, a little too much mayo for me, and the rolls were full of cucumber which overwhelmed everything else so I wouldn't recommend them or I would at least remove the cucumber. The kids enjoyed the Katsu but it's hard give many points for deep fried chicken cutlets.
All in all, a decent spot for fish but not so much for rolls. -

Sushi Zen is the perfect place for very fresh and delicious sushi!
We stopped by after picking up our son after work a few blocks away and were very pleasantly surprised to discover this neighborhood gem!
We truly enjoyed this culinary oasis with recording setting heat in San Francisco. We recieved prompt service and ordered from the descriptive photo menu. Ordering three rolls and a bento box with salmon sashimi. Our rolls were excellent and the prefect cooler for the blazing heat outside.
The decor is simple with drawings from customers on one side and candid photos of customers on the opposite wall. There is a small sushi and sake bar which is cozy.
Highly recommend Sushi Zen! I know we will return again! -

I was craving sushi and found this little gem! Surrounding the restaurant are pictures of various people and drawings, which makes the environment friendly and tight-knit, a sure sign of a family owned restaurant. I got the winter wonderland which has crab meat on top with shrimp tempura inside. My first impression was that it was a pretty basic special roll but I was amazed by the flavors produced from the roll; slightly creamy with a slight crunch. The only issues I had were that the sauce on the side was gel-like and service could be spotty as the waitress took a while to realize I finished. Other than that, the sushi here is really good for the price!
